C: Anglophilia

Oh, dear me!  My sister has recently put me onto Netflix, and I am so loving it.   Yes, I can get some pretty good, pretty current movieupstairsdownstairss through Netflix.  And I am a sucker for documentaries of all stripes, so I’ve done quite a bit of learning through those this past week. 

But what has really done it for me is the ability to see all my favorite BBC series.

I have rewatched all the Upstairs, Downstairs episodes.  I have worked my way through the first series of Downton Abbey, which I had not seen before. 

Both of these reawakened my great longing fordowntonabbey staff: A parlor maid to keep my house “tidy,” a cook to prepare and serve delicious meals so that I actually have  time to “dress for dinner,” and a butler to iron the creases out of my morning newspaper. 

Sigh.  I love this escape.

I have gotten two-thirds through the House of Cards trilohouse of cardsgy, and it’s just the best! 

I love the smooth evil of Francis Urquhart (so aptly called by his initials “F. U.”, first name  pronounced “Fraaahncis”) 

(If you haven’t  watched this series, by all means give it a go…

And here’s another thing:  All this British television is causing me to think like they speak.  In my thoughts (please, God, don’t let me actually enunciate this), I find myself using “cahn’t” instead of “can’t” and “ahfter” instead of “after,”" just as Francis or the Butler Hudson woucup of teald say. 

When else but when I am on a British telly streak am I tempted to use the word, “daresay,” as in “I daresay, old chap, I need to go and put a bit of stick about in that  courtroom…”

Such jolly fun…I think I’ll go and have a cup of tea and a biscuit…C

Daresay isn't a part of your normal vernacular? It is in mine. =D

Now I'm wondering about the House of Cards.

All I know is that I was cheated out of my Saturday evening BBC comedies and I want them back. Wonder how long those fundraisers last...

Tonight our PBS station is showing a two-hour reunion special of As Time Goes By...my favorite British comedy. :)

I've seriously considered Netflix for exactly the reason of access to BBC programs at will.

Gotta go...ATGB is starting!

I love those series too... and I made biscuits on the weekend and had many a cup of tea too! I'm not British but she share the Queen!

I love all the British series as well--one of my faves is the Herriot All Creatures Great and Small! Haven't seen House of Cards of As Time Goes By--I will be getting Netflix soon!

Love love love the BBC!
Our library has a lot of these.
just discovered "Doc Martin" and have loved "Ballykiss Angel". as well as all the mysteries.
Don't forget Hamish Macbeth the Scottish detective.

C: Lessons on a Bridge

We have a graceful bridge over the Arkansas River, uniting the North and South of our metropolitan area from its western side.  I don’t travel this bridge very often—maybe three or four times a year—finding that my travels take me more east-west and, if I go north, I usually travel on the Eastern side of the loop. But this week I had court in another county, and the logical route home brought me by way of this bridge.  It was on that day (last Thursday), that something occurred to me.  Never —not one time, I’d venture to say—do I traverse this bridge without thinking of an incident that occurred there in 1999.  Yes, 13 years ago, and the incident is still in my mind every time I cross the bridge.  I told V about this, and she c onfirmed that she, too, often thinks of it.
