C: My Favorite Room

You will never see my home in the decorating magazines. I am just not that "together." Still, like everyone, I have my own "style," which could be called (if you are being generous) "eclectic." If I like it, it's there. I don't spend a lot of thinking about what looks good together. My house is just a collection of my whimsy.

And there is no more whimsical room in my house than my powder room. It is so covered with quotes and sayings that some of my family laugh and call it "the reading room," because as you are tending to business, there is much to read!

I wanted to share this room with you and, impatient being that I am, cannot wait until someone better at photography can help, so bear with me...

The top photo is of the wall and corner directly across from the toilet--right in the line of view, as it were. The three prints are by Brian Andreas, one of my favorite artists. His work is called "story people," and indeed, these pieces do tell stories. I love them because--like all bloggers--I admire agility with words. I can't quote everything on these walls for you in the space of this post, but just to give you a taste of storypeople, the top print says:

Most of the stuff I say is true because I saw it in a dream and I don't have the presence of mind to make up lies when I'm asleep.

Over the toilet I have this framed collection of greeting cards quoting wisdom from the mouths of babes.

The one that most of my family attributes to my first-born personality is the one that says:
If you'd just do what I tell you, I wouldn't have to be bossy. Addison Graves, age 4.

I couldn't agree more...but my favorite of these three is by young Maura Stuard, age 8, who said,

Sometimes you just need to take a nap and get over it.

Then there is my penchant for all things Wizard of Oz. These bookmarks came from Barnes and Noble, and they have quotes by the Wizard, himself, to each of the characters--except, of course, for Dorothy, who discovered wisdom on her own.

The Lion's quote is:

As for you, my friend, you are a victim of disorganized thinking. You are under the unfortunate delusion that simply because you run away from danger you have no courage. You are confusing courage with wisdom.

Above these are framed bookmarks with the two witches from the same story. Glinda is saying, "Only bad witches are ugly." The Wicked Witch of the West intones: "You say 'wicked' like it's a bad thing."

Most of my decorating is on the cheap...framed greeting cards and bookmarks. But I have some "art," too. Under this glare is an original cartoon cel of Wiley Coyote, signed by Chuck Jones. On the opposite wall is The Pink Panther over Friz Freleng's signature. So, even my "art" is a bit whimiscal in this room!

And, finally, I have a favorite of all these sentiments (it's my favorite right now--subject to change by conditions in my life or my mood!):

There's more, but no time...thanks for taking this tour of my powder room! C

I think the powder room is a perfect place for 'eclectic'. I used to display my sister's tomato collection in the powder room. It just didn't 'go' anywhere else, but in the WC, its 'anything goes'!

I like everything except the Wizard of Oz things. If I had those hanging somewhere I visited right before going to bed, I'd dream of flying monkeys every night! :)

Oh! To be able to decorate for myself again! Our house is for sale and I filled it with things for other people! Good for you though... your house is full of things that make you happy!
Sorry to be so long MIA! LIFE. The End. You can read about why if you want to on my blog.

LOVE your powder room. You remind me of my aunt. Her bathroom is similar. But my favorite quote? The four-year-old. It's sums up my life. lol

THANK YOU FOR SHARING!

Love the idea of the quotes and pictures in the powder room. Your home should be a reflection of yourself and not a magazine. You go girl!!

I'm a huge fan of whimsical! My whole life is eclectic, so it's quite likely I'd LOVE your powder room. Besides, it's so very clever.

Blessings,
Kathleen

Looks like my kind of place. My style of decorating is eclectic also. What I see I like I get. No looking for something else. I hate to shop. If I need a lamp, I get the first lamp I see and come on home.

Love it! The last is the best. Thanks for sharing a very personal space.
I once had a friend who hung a framed photo of monster eyes at eye level in the bathroom, very realistic and extremly creepy.

I like "eclectic". I like people who BE THEMSELVES. & don't give a rip about what other people think. I'm getting more eclectic the older I get! (or is that senile?) That last photograph is too great!

This is a reading room. What a great way to start the day with quotes that impart wisdom! How neat that you have some authographed pieces! Have you seen the new Wizard of Oz Pez Candy dispensers. It's a cute set - you might need a set in your powder room - never know when someone might get hungry while they are in there reading! laurie

I love being in homes like yours, and I suspect many others do too...you are kind of hard on yourself you know.

Homes , real HOMES, reflect the personalities of the people dwelling in them. Your "reading room" seems to say a lot about you, so if I ever do visit you I'll make a bee-line for that room first! ( I would need to anyway because chances are I will have consumed vast quantities of coffee on my way to your place.)I especially like the cat sculpture you have there.

Thanks for sharing the fun! I bet people spend more time than needed in your reading room!I love the eclectic and love to find it at thrift stores sales, its like a treasure hunt when you find something to place in your life that evokes a thought or memory.

Beautiful post as always; I love eclectic style! I fact, that is how I would describe my own.;) I love when ones home is cluttered with things of affection, regardless if they fit with the decor or not.
I absolutely love the last picture and the sentiment.
Hope you had a lovely weekend,
xoxo

I love "C"'s powder room too! And the photo doesn't do justice to the most wonderful shade of blue - NOT baby blue--it's a deeper shade that I just love. And I had to laugh--it's true, I spend way too much time than needed in there when I go visit! I'm always checking to see if she's added something new! V.

Very nice.

I really like the humor in the quotes and the Wizard of Oz things. And the cats. Of course, the cats.

And I am impressed with the original Wile E. Coyote.

You are confusing courage with wisdom...... I like this the most.
Now you said that your are whimsical .. if you like it and it up on the wall. But is it so that if you like it once then you like it ofr eternity! maybe you do not like have it up there any longer.
But your wall is your wall and you have to be satisfied and thats it. It is quite different from the way designerdoes it for us, he or she tries to create something that will be appreciated by me, you and the general audience. When we do it for ourself.. its all about our taste.. the right amout of brewing with the correct amount of sugar and milk!!! :)

We used to have a family wall two years back. It was a wall with all the family members' photos nicely framed. We used to like that bit of wall above the console very much and every one used to admire and many of our firends replicated the same ocncept. But now I don't like to go back to the same theme again .. I want something new and will not be able to do before I get a fresh new idea...
To end it all .. your walls looks grand and intimate and must be full of memories!

C -- What a wonderful tour! I bet your house is gorgeous because it is so original.

When we moved to this house and I was picking out wallpaper for our powder room I found some with just line after line of words on it that when you looked closer you realized were famous quotes. It was really very pretty paper with the quotes done in a variety of styles of script. But Hubby vetoed it. What a bummer. The lady at the paper store and I thought it would be perfect. It wasn't meant for a bathroom, but some of the quotes, we thought, made it just a perfect fit -- like "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." and "Success is the product of hard work." I tell you the man has NO sense of humor. I think guests would have LOVED it! (alot more fun than the black flowered paper we ended up with) :)
