C: Disconnect to Connect

This video has so much to say....


Technology.  It is supposed to ease our workload--it makes me accessible to clients 7 days a week unless I use restraint.  Call that "easier?"  Nope.

Technology.  It is supposed to "connect" us.  I think this video makes a strong case for the opposite.  Handwritten letters and mailed invitations have gone by the wayside to be replaced by emails and evites.  Timelines for Facebook have taken the place of check-in or report phone calls.  Facebook posts have all the transparency and sincerity of Christmas newsletters. 

We are robbing ourselves of community.

I think technology is great...if we have the smarts and the discipline to tame it and make it work FOR our good, not against it.

Great commercial and I agree that Facebook status updates often hide more than they reveal but I do try to keep mine real. I just don't have the time to stay in phone contact with all who want to be on the phone so I do count on Facebook to help me see what's happening in the lives of others and to let them know about us.

My daughter has had some health problems and I keep people posted there. And texting is SO much more concise and quick than a phone conversation which can often run on too long. Oh what are the answers??? I don't know! But I did just deliver flowers and a hand written card to an aunt the other day because of some bad news so I HOPE I'm not losing touch with the proper civilities. I hope.......!

I love this video ! It is so true. As I sit with my sheep in an amazing barn at the state fair, I watch thousands of people go by. So many are on their phones. while ignoring not only the animals on display, they are oblivious to their children saying "Dad, look at that ! What is it ? " , and spouses talking away to the other spouse who seems to have a better relationship with the phone. And the crowds of young people. I watch a group of about 20 walk by and every one was involved with their phones. None were looking at each other. I was thinking they were probably all communicating with each other on their phones. :)

Since I hate the telephone, yes, I do, I have more people irritated with me for not talking to them on my little black cell phone that I keep put away in the dark recesses of my purse. If I remember to keep it charged, I might hear it ring once in awhile.

I am glad for the opportunity to use them when needed, and they are very convenient and good to have in case of emergency or for the occasional calls, but as you stated, we should use our smarts & discipline about them.

C: Lessons on a Bridge

We have a graceful bridge over the Arkansas River, uniting the North and South of our metropolitan area from its western side.  I don’t travel this bridge very often—maybe three or four times a year—finding that my travels take me more east-west and, if I go north, I usually travel on the Eastern side of the loop. But this week I had court in another county, and the logical route home brought me by way of this bridge.  It was on that day (last Thursday), that something occurred to me.  Never —not one time, I’d venture to say—do I traverse this bridge without thinking of an incident that occurred there in 1999.  Yes, 13 years ago, and the incident is still in my mind every time I cross the bridge.  I told V about this, and she c onfirmed that she, too, often thinks of it.
